Origin
Cameron is an Avatar, what bigots would call a mutant. It is not something he is proud of. His powers first evidenced themselves in his fourteenth year while defending a classmate from a pack of bullies. That nobody died that day was a matter of luck. Two of the would-be persecutors were hospitalized. One of them would not walk without special assistance again.
Horrified of what he had done, Cameron ran away from his home. Leaving behind the small-town life, he thought that he might be able to get lost in the bright lights of the big city. His parents, not able to reconcile their son with "what he became", abandoned him to his fate.
Cameron worked a series of odd-jobs, doing what he could to make money that was within the bounds of the law and that would simultaneously be as far from any form of conflict as possible. While many Avatars seek to explore their powers, learn control, and take them to greater heights, Cameron sought only to repress them. He was unusually successful at this. Perhaps it had to do with the young man's strong will, or through a well nurtured self-loathing, but Cameron's powers did not surface again for five years.
After attaining a GED Cameron, while fearing physical altercations, joined the Army. Without the support of his family and lacking experience that might land him a job that paid well enough, his only hope for a continuing education was service.
There were hints during his phyical examinations that there was more to Cameron than met the eye but it was during a brief, and explosive, altercation with his commanding officer that brought him to the attention of the brass. As an Unregistered Super-Powered Being, he was a felon. Given the choice between the brig and "specialized training", he went with the latter, and far less appealing, option.
Cameron would spend the next three years covertly removing thorns in the government's side.
His team was ambushed in the rainforests of South America and the survivors were put to work in a slave camp, harvesting drugs for Escoria Cartel. After giving up hope for a rescue that would never come, Cameron led a bloody revolt against his captors, effectively crippling the Cartel's business for quite some time there-after.
His directionless flight into the jungle ended in his exhausted collapse. His pathetic form was discovered by an aged, Oriental man who, like Cameron, was in the jungle to escape a past best forgotten. He nursed Cameron back to health and trained him in the martial arts. The discipline and inner quiet he learned under the Master's auspices helped Cam to better control his more extraordinary abilities. His perfect, peaceful life was shattered with the death of both his Master and his fellow student and lover: Laura "Champ" Reed.
Portrait
Cameron "DoubleShot" King is hardened man. One would not know this by his generally jovial disposition or constant wisecracking, but, should he remove the sunglasses he perpetually wears, a look into his eyes would reveal several lifetimes' worth of conflict, pain, and loss. He is a natural leader and a soldier forged in bloody skirmshes all over the globe. While he is not Earth's most powerful Super-Powered Being, he is quite possibly the deadliest. He cannot toss tanks or soar through the air, but he knows exactly how, and when, to apply his gifts to the most lethal effect, though he very rarely does so.
DoubleShot hates what he is. More than anything else in the world he wishes that he were merely human, that he'd lived all his life in that nearly-forgotton small town, taken a wife, had some kids. He wishes to be normal, overlooked, a nobody. He, of course, asked for none of what his life became. He hasn't seen or spoken to his parents in fourteen years.
DoubleShot is one of Earth's greatest heroes, even though he doesn't want to be. When the situation is hopeless, when doom is certain, when the opposition is invincible, DoubleShot's prowess and leadership turn the tide. As long as he lives, the safety and security of Humanity is assured.
Unfortunately, not even heroes live forever.
