Bloodwork was a brilliant research scientist who accidently transformed himself into a monster trying to save the life of the woman he loved. He was too late, she had already passed, so he injected himself with the dose meant for her. Rather than simply cure the HIV that had infected them both, the solution altered the unwitting Dr. Andrew Morton the genetic level and he transformed into a skinless giant.
Forlorn over the loss of his love for which he blames himself, Morton escapes into the sewers of Empire City. Eventually he returns to his lab and makes off with his equipment. He discovers, eventually, that his treatment was the cause of his unearthly transformation and at long last realizes that there really was nothing he could have done to truly save her. With his medicine, she would have lived, yes, but would have been a monster!
The revelation eased a great mental burden, but a greater one yet remained. His personality had been shattered by so many traumas upon his psyche. In one moment, he is Dr. Andrew Morton, renowned and mysteriously vanished genetic researcher extroirdinaire, and the next he his the cruel Bloodwork, an unstobbable behemoth that terrorizes the city. A bit of actual police work would reveal that there is method to the madness and that Bloodwork is not a rampaging beast, but a once-noble hero tortured by his own broken mind.
